What the heck is hygge?

When the Oxford Dictionary revised itself in 2016, one finalist in the word competition was hygge. Defined as “a quality of coziness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being,” the word is Danish, and you can expect to see it a lot more in upcoming winter wardrobes. While it may look unpronounceable for folks who don’t hail from Scandinavia, it’s really easy to say.

How to say it

Pronounced “HOO-guh,” the word derives from a closely related Danish word that describes consolation and comfort, explains The New Yorker magazine. Denoting gratitude, relaxation, and indulgence, hygge is not exactly a new concept. In fact, the term can be traced back to the mid-20th century. In a New Yorker article entitled Letter from Copenhagen, author Robert Shaplen described hygge as a ubiquitous quality of Gotham. Walk around the Big Apple on any winter evening, and you’re sure to see plenty of people getting their hygge on.

Things that can be hygge

Hygge can be a lot of things. And a lot of things can be hygge. See how that works? Imagine a cozy candlelit room with a fireplace ablaze and plenty of overstuffed furniture where you can curl up and get cozy. That’s hygge. In fact, bright arrays of candles are a big part of hygge in its homeland, says the Danish Tourism Board.

Danes deal with very long, dark winters, so they are especially enamored of brightening things up in a totally hyggelig fashion. Mulled wine, known in Denmark as gløgg, is another festive addition to all things hygge. Hygge your home, hygge a meal. Embrace opportunities to incorporate comforting hygge style things into your life.
