Before I was aware of essential oils, I believed I couldn’t use them. I suffer from combination skin, you see, and the idea of adding more oil to my face just seemed so silly. I held on to this belief until a friend made me realise otherwise.


Now I’m hooked. Essential oils are incredible; they keep my pores clear; my skin blemish-free; dry skin has been taken care of; and acne, what acne?


Here are my 5 favourite essential oils for skin.


#1 Tea tree essential oil for controlling acne

Let’s start with the most popular essential oil, and one of the commonest skin problems.


-The antibacterial properties of the oil banish acne-causing bacteria.

-The oil also regulates the production of oil on your face and reduces the frequency of acne.

-Dip a cotton bud in a few drops of tea tree oil and gently apply to pimples.

-Make sure it is pure oil and not a product that contains the oil.

-If your skin gets dry, you can add a few drops to aloe gel and then apply it.


#2 Rose essential oil for dry skin

This is your best friend for dry or aging skin. It is also among my favourite aroma oils for skin.


-Its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties soothe and heal dry skin.

-The oil can also help improve skin texture and tone, and keep wrinkles at bay.

-Apply a drop directly on dry skin, or dilute it 1:3 with carrier oils like olive or coconut oil.

-Diffuse the oil every morning to spread cheer in your home.


#3 Almond oil for skin whitening

The benefits of using almond oil for skin that is tanned are legendary.


-Warm up a few teaspoons of almond oil using the double boiler method.

-Massage the oil onto your face, neck and arms for 10-15 minutes.

-Do this every day and in a few weeks you will notice a visible lightening of your skin.


#4 Lavender essential oil

Lavender is one of the most amazing essential oils for anti-aging treatments. Just the smell is enough to add a spring to your step.


-Apply the essential oil directly to your skin.

-Or, add 2 drops of the oil to half a cup of water and transfer to a spray bottle. Use it as a quick pick-me-up any time during the day.

-Put a few drops on your palms, rub them briskly and apply the oil to your face. Do this for a few weeks and you will notice a visible vitality to your skin.

#5 Coconut essential oil

Coconut oil is an edible essential oil that has countless benefits. You can swap coconut oil for face creams and moisturisers.


-Rub a few drops of the oil onto your skin. It gets absorbed and doesn’t leave a sticky residue behind.

-Remove make-up and tone your skin in one go, with a few drops of coconut oil on a cotton swab.

-Add this oil to your beauty regimen and keep fine lines and wrinkles at bay.
