Finding Your Balance

The first thing you should remember when getting on your skis is to find your balance. Finding your balance is the key in skiing straight and prevents you from falling into the snow. To ensure that your weight is evenly distributed on your skis, find a flat area to wear your skis. Once you’re propped in your skis, bend your knees slightly until you’re putting some weight in your core and your back feels rounded. Now that you know how to lift off from the top of the hill, you have to learn how to slow down and stop. It’s crucial that you master slowing down and stopping, as these techniques protect you from bumping into someone or something during your run. When you find yourself going down the hill too fast, just remember the snow plough position. Widening the back of your skis while in the wedge position will slow you down. Turning with Your Weight

Turning correctly helps you avoid obstacles like trees and rocks that may come your way. However, turning can be a bit tough because you need to turn your skis to the direction you want them to go while speeding downhill. For a smoother transition, you have to shift your weight opposite to the direction of where you want to go. The simplest way to turn is to return to the snow plough position, and gently turn in the direction you want to go. Turn in one direction and then the other to keep going. This zigzagging manner prevents you from coming to a full stop.
